Fantastic Aga Tips & Tricks

The Aga is unlike any other kind of cooker – many will say that once you have one, you’ll never want to go back to cooking any other way again! Because they are unique, it may take a little getting used to, but you’ll soon find that you’re able to do a lot more with your Aga than you may have realised. If you have a new Aga in your home, here are some tips and tricks to help you get the most out of it.

Multitask

The Aga is a unique kind of kitchen cooker, because it’s a radiant heat cooker and you’ll tend to have it on almost all the time. This means that you can use its heat for all sorts of extra tasks, including drying, ironing and pressing your laundry!

Invest in a timer or two

Because the ovens will vent out of the exhaust stack, it’s fairly easy to leave a dish in your Aga and forget about it – you won’t smell it burning. Invest in a couple of timers and remember to set them to avoid discovering forgotten dishes long after they’ve carbonised.

Get ovenproof pans

Because of the way the Aga is designed, you’ll find that you do most of your cooking in the ovens rather than on the hotplates – this is more energy efficient, as you’ll always lose some heat when you’re using the hotplates. By getting pans which are ovenproof (in other words, no plastic handles), you can bring your dish to the boil on the hotplate and then pop it into the low oven to finish cooking.

Make natural firelighters

If you use citrus fruits in any dish you’re making – or if you enjoy making fresh orange juice – save the rinds and peels and put them in the warming oven for a couple of days to dry out. They make wonderful, natural firelighters which light really easily. Ideal just as we’re coming into barbecue season, too!
