The easy to use control panel on the Electrickit conversion (See picture) as fitted to an Aga that Range Experts fully reconditioned. The digital led screen displays the exact top oven temperature of the Aga, and with an up/down arrow you can turn the temperature up or down accordingly to the exact temperature that you require the Aga to run at.

The hotplates are usually turned on for use as this is the most energy efficient, although they can be left on half for more background heat. They should reach full temperature in around 30 minutes and the temperature can be independently adjusted on the control knobs

The science

Why is Electrickit more efficient?

Electrickit cleverly re-engineers your existing Aga shell for maximum modern efficiency making it considerably cheaper to run than a traditional oil, gas or LPG fuelled Aga and also a 13Amp Aga or standard 13Amp Aga conversion.

Over the course of a day the Aga is completely rebuilt, with the loose fill insulation removed and replaced with purpose built blankets with superior insulative properties. Individual elements serve each hotplate, enabling you to individually control each hotplate. Usually the hotplate is turned on for use and is up to full temperature in 30 minutes, the temperature can then be adjusted using the control knobs. The oven element is fitted between the ovens and the roasting oven temperature easily adjusted on a digital display. The top oven takes around 1-1.5 hours to get up to full roasting temperature from cold, compared to around 6-8 hours that a traditional oil or gas fired Aga. You can also leave the ovens ticking over so they are always ready to go whenever you need them just like with a traditional Aga. The simmering oven runs at approximately 65-70° below the roasting oven temperature. 4 oven conversions have a further control knob for the hot cupboard.

Do I need a flue?

No is the short answer. However, we highly recommend external ventilation as the oven will be pumping out hot air.

However, if we are leaving the cooker ‘in-situ’ then we can vent the ovens into the existing flue. This saves you the bother and cost of having it removed which can be substantial. If we are relocating your cooker for you then it is best placed on an outside wall and we can vent it as shown below. It’s a simple copper pipe going straight out the back – no flue through the roof required!

What are the electrical requirements of the conversion?

The ‘Electrikit’ simply wires into two 13amp fused spurs. These can be a separate circuit or part of an existing circuit.

How can I keep the oven in my range cooker clean?

Always read the manufacturer’s instructions for their advice before starting work.

On enamelled surfaces:  Wipe the affected area with a damp cloth wrung out in warm water and mild detergent. Remove obstinate marks using a paste or cream cleaner, rubbed gently so as not to damage the surface. These features can make cleaning easier:

Pyrolytic self-cleaning programs – Range cookers with pyrolytic self-cleaning programs super-heat to more than 400°C and incinerate oven waste. All that’s left at the end of the program is ash which you can sweep away.

Running costs

As with all Agas, it is very difficult to accurately predict running costs as every household will use their converted Aga differently.

However tests show that when used to maximum efficiency (only running the Aga when required) costs may be as low as £1 per day or below.

The following costs were calculated in field trials over a 12 month period by the developers of Electrickit based on an electric unit cost of 15p.

The users in question were a household of 2 working during the day. The converted Aga was used as follows:

AUTUMN 3 months timed operation on times 06:00 – 09:00 / 16.00 – 21.30 – 454Kw used

WINTER 3 months with oven on 24 hours a day – 708Kw used

SPRING 3 months timed operation on times 06.00 – 09.00 / 16:00 – 21.30 – 615Kw used

SUMMER 2012 3 months switched on when needed for cooking – 287Kw used The hobs were used only when required, this gave a total annual usage of 2064KW used.

At a rate of 15p* per KW this equated to £310.
